Toptal Pricing, Toptal Cost for Employers, Toptal Fees and What a Full-Time Toptal Hire Costs Against Hiring Direct

Hiring for a fully-remote role while you weigh this up? Post it here for $199 a month, salary range shown, employer verified by hand, read by an audience that wants nothing but remote work.

Toptal charges employers a flat $79 a month platform fee plus the hourly rate of the freelancer you hire, and it does not publish those rates. Buyer guides report most Toptal engagements at $60 to $150 an hour, with specialist and AI roles at $200 or more. There is no recruiting fee. At a reported $95 an hour, a full-time Toptal engineer costs about $198,500 a year, which is more than the roughly $180,000 a fully loaded US developer at the median salary costs when you hire direct.

That gap is the real pricing question. Toptal is excellent at speed and at fixed-length projects. For a permanent remote role it is usually the most expensive route, and a direct hire through a job listing, $199 a month here with a salary on every post and no commission, is where most teams end up. See what posting a remote role costs, or read on for the full breakdown.

How much does Toptal cost for employers?

There are two parts to a Toptal bill. The first is fixed. Toptal's FAQ states a flat monthly subscription of $79, charged once you decide to proceed with talent matching, cancellable at any time, and refundable on cancellation if Toptal cannot provide talent. Over a year that is $948.

The second part is the hourly or weekly rate for the person, and that is where Toptal says very little in public. Its pricing page describes the model as working with freelancers hourly, part time or full time for a fixed price on a weekly basis, with no hidden fees, and lists its recruiting fee as $0. It does not show a rate card. Toptal is a private company, so there is no public filing to read a revenue per client from either, which is the method we used for Dice pricing.

What exists instead is buyer reporting. Guides published in 2026 by firms that compete with Toptal put typical client rates at $60 to $150 an hour, with highly specialized or AI engineering talent at $200 or more. Treat those as ranges, not quotes, and note who wrote them. The table below uses three points across that range.

Reported hourly ratePart time, 20 hours a week for 3 monthsFull time for a year (2,080 hours)Full year including the $79 fee
$60$15,600$124,800$125,748
$95$24,700$197,600$198,548
$150$39,000$312,000$312,948

Billing follows the work. Toptal says it invoices twice a month on Net 10 terms and accepts major credit cards, ACH, bank wires and PayPal.

Does Toptal charge a fee to hire?

No separate one. Toptal lists a $0 recruiting fee, and there is no placement fee when you hire. Its margin sits inside the rate. The client-side hourly figure is set above what the freelancer is paid, and the difference covers screening, matching and the platform. You never see that split on an invoice, which is why comparing Toptal on its hourly rate against a salary is the only honest way to judge it.

The $500 deposit that many older reviews describe is worth a note. Several 2026 buyer guides still report it, credited against the first invoice. Toptal's own FAQ, read in September 2026, mentions only the $79 subscription. Ask during onboarding which applies to your account, and get it in writing.

What does the Toptal no-risk trial actually cover?

Each engagement starts with a trial of up to two weeks. If you are not satisfied, you are not billed for that time, and Toptal says you can keep any work completed during the trial. You can trial up to three people per position before choosing one.

That trial is the strongest part of the offer and it is genuinely rare. A job listing cannot give you two unbilled weeks of real work. It is worth being clear about what it does not cover, though. The $79 subscription runs regardless, and the trial protects you against a bad fit, not against the ongoing markup once the fit is good. Toptal also states that it accepts fewer than 3% of the more than 200,000 people who apply each year, and that 90% of clients hire the first candidate introduced. Those are Toptal's own figures, and they describe the screening you are paying for.

Toptal cost against a direct remote hire

This is the comparison buyer guides skip, so here is the arithmetic. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the May 2025 median annual wage for software developers at $135,980. A salary is not the whole cost. Using BLS employer compensation data for March 2026, benefits and employer payroll taxes for a professional salary add roughly 31 to 33 percent in cash once paid leave is not double counted. That puts a median developer at about $178,100 to $180,900 a year, fully loaded.

RouteYear one costWhat you get for it
Toptal at a reported $95 an hour, full timeAbout $198,500A screened contractor within days, two week trial, no employment obligations
Direct hire at the $135,980 median, loadedAbout $178,100 to $180,900, plus hiring costAn employee you own outright, no ongoing markup
Hiring cost for the direct route$398 for a 60 day listing hereApplicants who only want remote work; the screening is yours

Divide the loaded direct cost by 2,080 hours and the break-even Toptal rate is about $86 an hour. Below that, a full-time Toptal engagement can cost less than a median hire. Above it, which covers most senior engineering work in the reported range, direct hiring is cheaper from the first year and the gap repeats every year after, because the markup never ends.

There are fair caveats. A contractor bills only for hours worked, while an employee is paid through vacation, so a contractor taking three weeks off narrows the gap. A direct hire also costs your time: writing the post, screening, interviewing. And the median is a median. If the person you need earns $200,000 as an employee, compare against that, not against $135,980. Our cost per hire calculator puts your own numbers into the direct side.

Toptal vs Upwork on price

Upwork is cheaper to use and much more work to use well. According to Upwork's help center, clients on the free Basic plan pay a marketplace fee of up to 7.99% on every payment to a freelancer, reduced to 3% for eligible US clients who pay by bank account. Business Plus clients pay 10%, or 8% by US bank payment. Upwork also charges a one-time contract initiation fee on new contracts.

The honest summary is that the two sell different things. Upwork sells access to a very large market at a low fee, and you do the vetting. Toptal sells a shortlist, and you pay for it in the rate. If what you actually need is an autonomous agent or an AI workflow built rather than a person hired, a marketplace to hire AI developers and agents is a closer fit than either.

Our Toptal vs Upwork comparison applies both fee schedules to three hiring scenarios, including Upwork's 13.5% conversion fee, and the page on Toptal alternatives prices Arc, Lemon.io and Wellfound on the same basis.

When Toptal is worth the price, and when it is not

Toptal earns its rate when time matters more than money. A defined three month project, a specialist you need next week, a gap while a permanent search runs, or a role where a bad hire would cost more than the markup. The two week trial and the pre-screened shortlist are real value in those cases.

It is harder to justify for a permanent member of a remote team. Once the person is working well, you are paying a markup for a service that has already been delivered, every hour, indefinitely. That is the point where most companies either negotiate a conversion or hire the next person directly. If the role is fully remote and based in the US, a listing that shows the salary and reaches people who already want remote work is the cheaper route. Our guides to hiring remote developers in the USA and to remote job posting sites compare where to post it and what each site costs.

What to ask Toptal before you sign

Four questions settle most of the uncertainty. What hourly or weekly rate applies to this role, in writing? Is a deposit required on this account, and how is it credited? What does it cost to convert the contractor to a direct employee later, and after how long? And what notice period applies if you end the engagement? The last two matter most for anyone who suspects the role may become permanent, because the conversion terms decide whether Toptal is a bridge to a hire or a permanent cost line.

Quick answers

How much does Toptal cost for employers?

Toptal charges a flat $79 a month platform subscription once you proceed with talent matching, according to its own FAQ, plus the hourly rate of the person you hire. Toptal does not publish those rates. Buyer guides report most engagements between $60 and $150 an hour, and specialist or AI roles at $200 or more.

Does Toptal charge a recruiting fee?

No. Toptal's pricing page lists its recruiting fee as $0 and there is no placement fee on the hire itself. Toptal earns its margin inside the hourly rate you pay, which is blended above what the freelancer receives, and through the $79 monthly subscription.

Is there a deposit to hire on Toptal?

Many buyer guides report a $500 deposit credited against the first invoice. Toptal's own FAQ, read in September 2026, describes only the $79 monthly subscription, refundable on cancellation if Toptal cannot provide talent. Confirm the current terms during onboarding, because they have changed over time.

Is Toptal cheaper than Upwork?

Usually not per hour. Upwork charges clients a marketplace fee of up to 7.99% on the free Basic plan, or 3% for eligible US clients paying by bank account, and freelancer rates there start much lower. Toptal costs more because it shortlists pre-screened people for you, which is what you are paying for.

Is Toptal worth it for a full-time hire?

Rarely on cost alone. At a reported $95 an hour, a full-time Toptal engineer costs about $198,500 a year, while a US software developer at the May 2025 median salary of $135,980 costs about $178,000 to $181,000 fully loaded. Toptal wins on speed and for fixed-length projects.
