Remote First Companies: What Remote-First Means, and 24 Verified Employers
A remote-first company is one where working remotely is the default rather than a perk: there is no headquarters that decisions flow through, meetings and documents are built for people who are not in a room together, and an employee who never visits an office is at no disadvantage. Remote-friendly companies allow remote work; remote-first companies are designed around it.
Last updated September 2026.
Remote first companies on Latestremote are employers we vetted before their first listing ran: fully-remote roles only, a published timezone policy, and async work as the norm. All 24 of them are listed below, with 97 open roles between them on the latest remote jobs board.
Check one
Every open role is fully remote. Companies with office-required or hybrid roles don't pass, full stop.
Check two
A published timezone policy: which overlaps each role needs, stated on the listing, so nobody discovers a 6am standup after signing.
Check three
Async norms in practice: written decisions, documented processes, and salaries published on every post.
Remote-first vs remote-friendly vs hybrid
These three labels get used interchangeably in job ads, and they describe very different jobs. Hybrid describes where you work. Remote-first and remote-friendly describe how the company works, which is what actually determines whether being remote costs you anything.
| Remote-first | Remote-friendly | Hybrid | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Default place of work | Anywhere in the stated timezone band. No office to report to. | The office, with remote days permitted. | A fixed split, commonly two or three office days a week. |
| Where decisions get made | In writing, in a document or thread everyone can read later. | Often in the room, then summarized for whoever missed it. | On office days, which is why attendance is mandated. |
| Meetings | Everyone joins from their own screen, so nobody is a face on a wall. | A conference room plus dial-ins, and the dial-ins lose. | Scheduled on office days by design. |
| Hiring radius | National or wider, limited only by timezone overlap and payroll. | Usually commuting distance, with exceptions for senior hires. | Commuting distance, always. |
| Pay benchmark | National band, sometimes a single rate regardless of location. | Set by the headquarters metro. | Set by the headquarters metro. |
| Risk of a return-to-office mandate | Low. There is no real estate to justify. | High. The office is still the default. | High, and the split tends to widen over time. |
The practical test when you read a listing: ask where the last significant decision was written down. If the honest answer is a meeting room, the job is remote-friendly no matter what the ad says.

What remote-first culture and policy actually look like
Remote-first culture
Culture is the part that cannot be faked in a job ad, so look for artifacts instead of adjectives. Remote-first teams write things down: a decision log, a public roadmap, recorded demos, an internal handbook a new hire can read on day one without asking anyone. Meetings have agendas because someone in another timezone has to be able to skip them and still know what happened.
The tell in the other direction is a company where the important context lives in hallway conversation. That is not a culture problem you can fix from your kitchen table, and it is the single most common reason a remote job at a headquarters-centric employer stops feeling viable after six months.
Remote-first policy
Policy is the written version: which states or countries the company can legally employ you in, the timezone overlap each role requires, what equipment and home-office stipend you get, how travel and any all-hands gatherings work, and whether pay is benchmarked nationally or by your zip code. A company with a real remote-first policy can hand you these answers in a document. One without will improvise them in the offer call.
Ask about location specifically. Even committed remote-first employers can only hire where they have payroll registered, which is why an otherwise perfect role sometimes lists eight states. That constraint is legal and financial, not a judgment about you.
Genuinely remote-first employers are a minority of the market, which is the whole reason this register exists. Analyzing new US job postings in the first quarter of 2026, Robert Half found 77 percent were fully on site, 19 percent hybrid, and 4 percent fully remote. Searching a general job site for remote work means sorting that 4 percent out of everything else by hand, and a large share of what is tagged remote turns out to be hybrid on closer reading. The wider numbers behind the shift are collected in our roundup of remote work statistics.
Questions people ask about remote first companies
- What does remote-first mean?
- Remote-first means remote work is the company default rather than an accommodation. There is no headquarters that decisions route through, processes and tools are built for people in different places and timezones, and someone who never sets foot in an office is on equal footing for information, projects and promotion.
- What is remote-first culture?
- A remote-first culture is one where the important context is written down instead of spoken in a room. In practice that looks like decision logs, an internal handbook, recorded demos and agendas on every meeting, so a colleague six timezones away can catch up without asking anyone to repeat themselves.
- What is a remote-first policy?
- It is the written document covering where the company can legally employ you, the timezone overlap each role needs, equipment and home-office stipends, how any in-person gatherings work, and whether pay is benchmarked nationally or by location. Employers who are genuinely remote-first can send you that document before you accept.
- Is remote-first the same as fully remote?
- Not quite. Fully remote describes a single job with no office requirement. Remote-first describes how the whole company operates. You can hold a fully remote job at a headquarters-centric employer, which usually means the decisions still happen in a room you are not in.
- How do I find remote-first companies in the US?
- Start with employers whose remote setup is verifiable rather than claimed: a published timezone policy, salary ranges on every listing, and no office-required roles anywhere on their careers page. The register above lists 24 US-eligible employers we checked against exactly those criteria before their first listing ran.
- Do remote-first companies pay less than office employers?
- Generally no. Because they hire across the whole country rather than one metro, most benchmark pay nationally, and some pay a single rate regardless of where you live. What changes is that the headquarters-city premium disappears in both directions, so a role can pay more than your local market and less than the same title in San Francisco.
