Wellfound Pricing for Employers, What Wellfound Costs to Post a Job, Promote It, or Hire Through Autopilot
Hiring for a fully-remote role while you weigh this up? Post it here for $199 a month, salary range shown, employer verified by hand, read by an audience that wants nothing but remote work.
Wellfound charges employers nothing to post jobs. You pay only if you want more: Job Ads from $200 per job for top-of-results placement, Wellfound Reach AI sourcing at $199 per seat a month, or Autopilot, a dedicated recruiter, at $500 a month per open role plus 10% when you hire. For most startups the free post is the right first step. The number to watch is the 10% on Autopilot, which on a senior engineer is larger than every other line on this page combined.
Every price below was read on Wellfound's own pricing, job posting and Autopilot pages in September 2026. We run a remote job board, which sells listings to some of the same employers, so treat our conclusions with that in mind; the figures are Wellfound's. If you are weighing Wellfound against the other places you could post, our comparison of ZipRecruiter alternatives for employers puts eight sites on the same cost basis.
How much does Wellfound cost for employers?
Wellfound sells three products, and only one of them has a price you pay every month by default. That one is optional.
| Product | What you get | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Job Posts | Unlimited listings, applicant management, built-in ATS or sync with Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable | $0, forever |
| Job Ads | Top-of-results placement, a dedicated email blast to matched candidates, promotion in the newsletter | From $200 per job |
| Reach, Explore | AI sourcing agents, 20 contact reveals a month, 3 active agents | $0 a month |
| Reach, Growth | 1,000 contact reveals a month, ATS integration | $199 per seat per month |
| Reach, Scale | Unlimited contact reveals, SSO | Custom quote |
| Autopilot | A 1:1 Wellfound recruiter who sources, pitches and schedules 5 to 10 candidates a week | $500 a month per open role, plus 10% on a successful hire |
That structure is unusual. Most job sites charge to post and give sourcing away as an upsell. Wellfound gives posting away and charges for sourcing, which tells you where it thinks the value is: a startup's problem is rarely a lack of applicants, it is reaching the engineer who is not applying anywhere.
Is Wellfound free to post jobs?
Yes. Wellfound lists Job Posts at $0 forever, with no cap on the number of listings or applicants, and says listings go out through its own search, candidate email alerts and the weekly newsletter. It also says its median time to a first applicant is under a day, and that listings with compensation shown, a complete company profile and one or two screening questions fill faster.
Two limits are worth knowing before you plan around the free tier. The first is audience. Wellfound says it reaches more than 10 million opted-in, startup-minded candidates, which is excellent for engineering, product, design and early sales roles, and thin for a claims adjuster, a bookkeeper or a customer support lead. The second is placement. A free post competes with every other free post, and the $200 Job Ad exists precisely to lift yours above them, so free is a floor rather than a guarantee of visibility.
What Wellfound Autopilot really costs per hire
Autopilot is priced like two products stacked together: a monthly retainer of $500 per open role, and a 10% fee when the search succeeds. Wellfound's page says there is no contract and you can pause at any time. It does not say which salary figure the 10% is calculated on, so ask whether it is base salary or total first-year compensation before you sign; with equity or a signing bonus the difference is real.
Assuming the 10% applies to base salary, here is what a search costs at three salary levels. The middle row uses the May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics median for software developers, $135,980.
| Base salary | Autopilot, 1 month search | Autopilot, 2 months | Autopilot, 3 months | Agency at 20% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $80,000 | $8,500 | $9,000 | $9,500 | $16,000 |
| $135,980 | $14,098 | $14,598 | $15,098 | $27,196 |
| $180,000 | $18,500 | $19,000 | $19,500 | $36,000 |
Two things follow from the arithmetic. First, the monthly fee barely matters: at $135,980, a search that runs three months instead of one adds $1,000 to a $14,098 bill, about 7%. The placement fee is at least 84% of the cost in every row, and 90% or more at the two higher salaries. So the retainer is not what you should negotiate; the percentage is.
Second, Wellfound's comparison with agencies holds up. Its own pricing page describes the fee as a fraction of an agency's typical 20% to 30%, and against a 20% contingency fee Autopilot costs a little over half as much at every salary level in the table. Our breakdown of recruiter fees shows where 20% sits in the range US agencies actually charge.
Where the comparison stops flattering Autopilot is against a job listing. The same two month search for the same $135,980 engineer costs $398 as a listing on this board, at $199 a month, with no fee when you hire. That is roughly one thirty-sixth of the Autopilot bill. You are buying something real with the difference, which is a recruiter's time reviewing hundreds of profiles and writing to the best 50 to 100 each week. Whether that is worth $14,000 depends on whether anyone on your team has those hours.
Wellfound Reach or Autopilot, which one to pay for
Reach is the do-it-yourself version of the same idea. AI agents find candidates and draft personalized outreach, and it sends from your own Gmail or Outlook rather than from a Wellfound address. The free Explore plan gives you 20 contact reveals a month, which is enough to test one role. Growth is $199 per seat per month for 1,000 reveals. Standalone sourcing tools such as Juicebox and Pin start at $99 a seat, and we compare them seat by seat in LinkedIn Recruiter alternatives.
Because the messages go out from your real inbox, they look like they come from a founder or hiring manager, which is the point, and it also means your own sending reputation is on the line if you run large volumes. It helps to set one consistent company email signature for everyone sending, so a candidate who replies sees a real title and company rather than a bare name. Three months of Reach Growth for one seat is $597, which buys a lot of outreach if someone on your team will actually work the replies.
The rule of thumb: pay for Reach when you have the time to run outreach but not the list, and pay for Autopilot when you have neither. If you have applicants but cannot get them to the right people fast enough, neither product solves that, and a narrower audience will.
When Wellfound is the right choice and when it is not
Wellfound is the right first stop for an early-stage startup hiring engineers, designers, product managers or first go-to-market staff, particularly where equity is part of the offer. The audience expects startup compensation, the post is free, and the ATS is included. There is no good reason not to post there if that describes your role.
It is a weaker fit in three situations. If the role is outside software and startup functions, the audience is simply not there. If you are a mature company with no equity story, you are competing for attention with companies offering it. And if the role is fully remote and you want applicants who specifically want remote work, a remote-only board is the narrower match, because Wellfound's audience includes plenty of people who want an office at a startup in their own city.
For a remote hire, the practical plan is to post free on Wellfound and add a remote listing alongside it. Our remote job posting sites comparison sets the remote boards against each other, and Toptal alternatives covers the full-time conversion fees on Arc, Upwork and Wellfound if you are deciding between a contractor and a hire. When you are ready, a remote listing here is $199 a month, with a salary range on every post and nothing owed when you hire.
Quick answers
How much does Wellfound cost for employers?
Posting jobs on Wellfound costs nothing, with unlimited listings and a built-in ATS. Paid options are Job Ads from $200 per job for top placement, Wellfound Reach AI sourcing at $199 per seat per month on the Growth plan, and Autopilot, a dedicated recruiter, at $500 a month per open role plus 10% on a successful hire.
Is Wellfound free for employers?
Yes for posting. Wellfound's pricing page lists Job Posts at $0 forever, with unlimited job listings, applicant management and ATS sync for Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby and Workable. It earns its money from promoted Job Ads, the Reach sourcing product and the Autopilot recruiter service, all of which are optional.
How much does Wellfound Autopilot cost?
Autopilot costs $500 a month per open role plus a 10% placement fee when you make a successful hire, with no contract and the option to pause. On a developer paid $135,980, a two month search costs $1,000 in monthly fees and $13,598 in placement fee, $14,598 in total.
Is Wellfound cheaper than a recruiting agency?
Usually. Wellfound positions Autopilot against agencies charging 20% to 30% of salary, and at 10% plus $500 a month it undercuts them on most searches. At $135,980, a 20% agency fee is $27,196 against $14,598 for a two month Autopilot search. It is still far more than a job listing.
What is the difference between Wellfound Reach and Autopilot?
Reach is self-serve: AI agents find candidates and send personalized outreach from your own Gmail or Outlook, starting free and $199 per seat a month on Growth. Autopilot is done for you: a Wellfound recruiter sources, pitches and schedules 5 to 10 candidates a week for $500 a month per role plus 10% on hire.
